THE CHALLENGE

Quad Services holds the cleaning and maintenance contract for Mascot and other rail stations across Sydney’s train network. Station platforms accumulate a persistent mix of  grease, brake dust from rolling stock, chewing gum residue, spilled food and drink, and general urban grime — all ground into concrete and paved surfaces by tens of thousands of commuter footsteps every day.

Standard cleaning products and detergents struggle to cut through this combination of heavy organic and inorganic contamination. Grease and brake dust bond to porous concrete surfaces, and conventional mopping or scrubbing often just moves the grime around rather than lifting it. The result is a gradual darkening and deterioration of platform surfaces that affects both the presentation of the station and the perception of cleanliness for passengers.

Quad’s cleaning teams needed a heavy-duty degreaser that could break down embedded grease and industrial grime on concrete and masonry quickly, work effectively at dilution to keep costs manageable across multiple station sites, and deliver a visible improvement in surface appearance after each clean.

OUR SOLUTION

Quad Services adopted Chemron’s UBC (Under Bonnet Cleaner) as their primary platform degreasing product across their Sydney rail station cleaning operations.

UBC is a heavy-duty, alkaline degreaser that cuts through grease, oil, oxidation and industrial grime far more aggressively than conventional cleaning detergents. Originally formulated for engines and heavy equipment, its chemistry is equally effective on the contamination found on rail station platforms. Brake dust, petroleum residues and organic matter combine into a stubborn surface films.

The product is highly concentrated and dilutable, allowing Quad’s teams to adjust strength depending on the severity of contamination at each station. For routine platform maintenance, a lighter dilution delivers effective cleaning at a low cost per square metre. For deep cleans, a stronger mix provides the aggressive degreasing power needed to restore concrete surfaces to a visibly clean standard.

UBC also chemically brightens oxidised surfaces — an important benefit on concrete and masonry platforms that have dulled over time. This brightening effect means the product doesn’t just clean the surface, it restores its appearance, delivering the kind of visible result that matters in a public-facing transport environment.

RESULTS & OUTCOMES

  • Core Product Standardised product across Quad's cleaning kit
  • Multi-Site Deployed across multiple Sydney rail stations
  • Since 2022 Ongoing Chemron supply relationship with Quad Services

UBC has become a standard product in Quad Services’ cleaning operations across their Sydney rail station contract. The team has placed three orders over an 18-month period — from an initial trial through to regular bulk reordering in 15-litre packs — confirming the product’s effectiveness and value in their day-to-day operations.

The concentrated formulation means each drum goes further than conventional cleaning products, keeping Quad’s cost per station clean competitive while delivering a noticeably higher standard of surface cleanliness. The chemical brightening effect on concrete platforms has been particularly valued in a public transport context, where visible cleanliness directly reflects on both the station operator and the contracted cleaning provider.

The Quad Services deployment demonstrates UBC’s versatility well beyond its traditional automotive and engine bay origins. Rail station platforms, bus depots, ferry terminals and any high-traffic concrete or masonry environment where embedded grease, brake dust and urban grime accumulate are natural applications for UBC’s heavy-duty alkaline degreasing chemistry. For FM contractors managing large public infrastructure portfolios, it offers an effective, economical alternative to underperforming general-purpose cleaners.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

"UBC cuts through the built-up grease and grime on station platforms far better than the general-purpose cleaners we were using before. The concrete comes up noticeably brighter after each clean, and because it's so concentrated we get good value out of every drum across multiple sites."
