CLIENT OVERVIEW
- ORGANISATION Pittwater, Warringah & Manly Councils
- OPERATIONS Maintenance of ocean swimming pools and coastal infrastructure across Sydney's Northern Beaches, Palm Beach to Manly
- APPLICATION Ocean pools & boat ramps
THE CHALLENGE
Sydney’s Northern Beaches — stretching from Palm Beach to Manly — are home to some of Australia’s most heavily visited and iconic ocean swimming pools. These ocean-fed pools require ongoing maintenance to prevent the build-up of moss, algae and marine contaminants that create hazardous, slippery surfaces and compromise water quality. Because these facilities operate in a natural ocean-water environment, traditional treatments such as chlorine are not a viable option. The councils required an effective solution that could directly control algae growth while preserving the surrounding marine ecosystem and ensuring public safety year-round.
Without a reliable maintenance product, pools risked slip and fall injuries, poor water quality outcomes, and periodic closures — directly impacting tens of thousands of local swimmers and visitors each year.
OUR SOLUTION
All three councils implemented Chemron’s Algae Died B as their targeted algaecide treatment across their ocean swimming pools. The product enables operators to effectively limit algae growth without harming the broader marine environment, allowing pools to be maintained to a consistently high standard throughout the year. Algae Died B’s environmentally responsible formulation was a critical factor — in an ocean-fed environment, any treatment must be safe for marine life. The product met this requirement while delivering reliable, repeatable results across multiple pool sites simultaneously. In addition to pool maintenance, Algae Died B was also deployed on council boat ramps — removing slippery moss and algae to restore surface traction and improve safety for vehicles launching and retrieving boats.
RESULTS & OUTCOMES
- 3 Councils using Algae Died B across the Northern Beaches
- 12/12 Months — year-round pool maintenance achieved
- Since 2019 Ongoing supply relationship with Northern Bea
- National Reach Coastal councils across Australia now using the same solution
With the adoption of Algae Died B, Sydney’s Northern Beaches councils have been able to maintain their ocean pools to an excellent standard while significantly reducing slip hazards and supporting water quality outcomes. The environmentally friendly formulation ensures the treatment is safe for the marine environment — a non-negotiable requirement for ocean-fed pools where chlorine is not an option.
Beyond pool surfaces, the product’s effectiveness on boat ramps has provided additional safety benefits for recreational users, further demonstrating its versatility across coastal infrastructure. The success of the Northern Beaches deployment has driven broader national adoption, with many coastal councils throughout Australia now implementing the same solution to manage their ocean pools and marine-adjacent facilities.
